Local AI for Solicitors: Private AI That Keeps Matter Files in the Firm
Search a matter, summarise 300 pages of correspondence, first-draft the standard letters — on a machine in your own office, so nothing privileged or confidential is ever handed to a third-party AI processor.
Local AI for solicitors is private AI running on a dedicated machine inside the firm rather than on a cloud provider's servers. It searches matter files, summarises correspondence and discovery, and drafts standard letters — with privileged and confidential material never leaving your network. AgentHub installs and supports it. It assists with the work; it never gives the advice.

No third-party processor · Irish, PhD-led team · Bring your compliance partner to the call
The product is Local AI: one machine in the firm running private chat, document spaces and assistants. Our AI receptionist for solicitors takes the calls; this takes the reading.
Why a Law Firm's Files Are the Last Thing That Should Go to a Public Chatbot
A solicitor's matter file is confidential three times over. The client is owed confidentiality as a matter of professional duty. Much of the file is legally privileged, and privilege is the kind of thing that can be argued to have been waived by handing a document to a third party. And the other side's personal data is in there too — the vendor's, the respondent's, the witness's — none of whom consented to anything. Add the commercial retainers that expressly forbid passing client documents to an external processor, and you have a folder that no public AI tool, on any tier, was designed for.
Meanwhile, the work is exactly the kind of work AI is good at. Discovery to review. A 300-page correspondence file to summarise before a consultation. A lease to check against heads of terms. Standard letters — the engagement letter, the section 68 letter, the undertaking, the requisitions cover letter — that are 90% the same every time. The trainee who needs the summary by four o'clock has a free chatbot open in a tab, and a ban only moves it to their phone.
Local AI puts the same capability on a machine in the firm. The matter file goes into a document space; the model reads it at question time and answers with a citation to the page; the draft letter comes back in your house style. Nothing crosses your network boundary for the AI step — no third-party processor, no international transfer, no privilege argument to have. Our GDPR-compliant AI page sets out what that removes from the assessment; our guide to ChatGPT and confidential information covers when a pasted client file becomes a reportable breach.
Private AI for the Reading and Drafting a Law Firm Does Every Day
One machine in the firm. Fee earners and staff sign in with the Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace accounts they already have.
Matter Spaces
A space per matter or per department. Ask "what did the other side say about the boundary in March?" and get the answer with the letter it came from. Compare the lease against the heads of terms. Summarise a discovery bundle.
Private Chat
A ChatGPT-style assistant on the firm's own hardware. First-draft standard letters in your house style, restructure a note into a memo, plain-English a clause for a client — for the fee earner to review and sign.
AI Assistants
Recurring jobs made repeatable: the client-update letter from the file notes, the closing checklist, the monthly WIP summary — built on the same machine and covered by the same support.
What Local AI Does on a Matter, Department by Department
| Department | The reading and drafting | What Local AI does | What stays with the solicitor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conveyancing | Contracts, requisitions, planning and title documents | Checks the contract against the heads of terms; summarises the title; drafts requisition cover letters | The advice, the undertaking, the certificate of title |
| Litigation | Discovery, pleadings, correspondence bundles | Summarises a bundle; finds every mention of a date, a person or a term, with citations | Strategy, privilege calls, what goes in the affidavit |
| Probate | Wills, asset schedules, Revenue correspondence | Extracts the asset schedule from the papers; drafts beneficiary update letters | The grant application, the tax position |
| Family law | Affidavits of means, correspondence, court orders | Summarises a long file for a consultation; drafts standard correspondence | Everything said to the client |
| Commercial | Agreements, due-diligence data rooms | Compares drafts; finds the change-of-control clause in 400 pages; summarises the data room | The mark-up and the negotiation |
| Practice management | Precedents, procedures, HR files | Searches the precedent bank; keeps the procedures manual current | Compliance decisions |
Local AI Assists With the Work — It Never Gives the Advice
The line every solicitor will want drawn before a machine goes near a matter file.
| Area | Local AI does | Local AI never does |
|---|---|---|
| Legal advice | Nothing | Advise a client, or produce anything that goes out unreviewed |
| Reading | Summarises, searches and compares, with citations to the page | Replace reading the document that matters |
| Drafting | First drafts of standard letters and memos in your house style | Sign, send or file anything |
| Privilege | Keeps everything on a machine in the firm — no third party sees the file | Send privileged material to an AI provider |
| The case management system | Sits beside it; matter folders are imported into spaces | Replace or alter your case management records |
| Training | Nothing — models arrive trained and stay that way | Use your files to train any model |
One honest limit: local models are somewhat slower than the largest cloud services and trail them on hard, novel reasoning. For summarising, searching and drafting against your own files — the bulk of a firm's AI use — they are very capable, and that's the trade most firms take for privilege staying intact. For the phone and the general inbox, where no privileged material is involved, our cloud AI receptionist for solicitors and email management for solicitors are the right tools.

Local AI for Law Firms: Your Questions Answered
Does using AI on a matter file risk waiving privilege?
Handing privileged material to a third party is where that argument starts. With Local AI there is no third party: the model runs on a machine in the firm, the file never leaves your network, and no AI provider receives anything. Whether that satisfies your view of privilege is the firm's call; we'll give you the facts in writing.
Can it search across a whole matter file?
Yes. A matter folder — correspondence, pleadings, discovery, title documents — goes into a document space. Ask a question and the model reads the relevant pages at that moment and answers with a citation to the document and page. Remove a document from the space and it disappears from future answers.
Will it draft letters in our house style?
Yes, once shown your precedents. Standard letters — engagement, section 68, undertakings, requisition cover letters, client updates — come back as first drafts in your format, for the fee earner to review and sign. It never sends anything, and it never gives advice.
Does it connect to our case management system?
It sits beside it. Your case management system stays the system of record; matter folders are imported into document spaces for searching and summarising, and drafts are pasted back where you keep them. We'll talk through your specific setup on the call.
Who is the data processor for the AI?
Nobody, for the AI processing itself — it runs on your machine. AgentHub is a processor only for the support access you grant, under a data processing agreement we sign before go-live. You remain the controller for your clients' data throughout, and your retention policy keeps applying.
How much does Local AI cost for a solicitor's practice?
Three parts, in euro: the hardware, the setup, and a monthly support fee covering updates, model upgrades, backups and the people who installed it. No per-user or per-matter fees. We quote after a short call once we know the number of fee earners and which department starts.
